A Leicestershire Police Digital Media Investigator scooped a national award for innovation at a ceremony last night (Thursday 14 March).
PC Jay Lucas claimed first place in the Innovation in Digital Investigation and Intelligence category at the International Digital Investigation and Intelligence Awards, after his outstanding work on a piece of software called, ‘Voldata Collector’.
The tool captures a host of useful information and turns it into an easy to use report. It is now a key part of the response toolkit for cyber and digital responders and has assisted in capturing key evidence at the scene of numerous offences.
There was further success for Leicestershire Police as Detective Inspector, Pete Flynn was awarded highly commended in the, Excellence in Leadership of a Digital Investigation category. Pete has worked in digital policing for four years and has led the digital team for over a year.
Under his leadership the department has continued to grow and achieved a number of extremely successful outcomes. This can largely be attributed to Pete’s ongoing ethos of officer development and empowerment.
The digital team as a whole was also awarded highly commended at the awards evening, following a successful year.
Excellent work has seen the department receive commendations for the role they played throughout a number of investigations. This work has seen them take digital evidence from hundreds of devices as well as examine hours of CCTV, all of which has helped to secure successful prosecutions.
Chief Officer David Sandall, said: “It was a fantastic evening for the whole of our digital team, with the awards ceremony highlighting just how far the department has come and the strength in depth of it.
“Jay’s success was richly deserved and a product of all of his hard work. It was also extremely pleasing to see Pete Flynn highly commended for his leadership. Pete has done a fantastic job with the department under his guidance the team has continued to grow; this was highlighted by the national recognition the department as a whole received.
“It is exciting to think that the digital hub is only going to get even stronger in time, the potential the department as a whole has is very exciting.”
On winning his award, Jay Lucas, said: “I am extremely honoured to have won this award. A lot of time and effort went into my work and whilst winning an award was never my target, it is certainly a fantastic addition.”
Head of the Digital Hub, Pete Flynn, said: “This evening has been a fantastic celebration for the whole of the department. To be shortlisted in three different categories was an absolute honour and is a real credit to absolutely everyone who makes up our fantastic team.”
