Leicestershire Police’s Digital Hub has been shortlisted for a national award, following an exceptional year’s work.
The team have made it down to the final two, in the ‘Digital Investigation & Intelligence Team of the Year’ category, at the ‘International Digital Investigation and Intelligence Awards 2019’.
The awards ceremony which takes place today (Thursday 14 March), celebrates effective digital investigation and the role it plays in both detecting and preventing traditional and evolving types of digital crime.
The digital hub which is made up of the: Digital Media Investigation Team, Digital Forensics Unit, Paedophile Online Investigation Team and Cyber Dependent Crime Unit is up against Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) for the award.
Formed initially in 2017, Leicestershire’s Digital Hub works across several units with such unique efficiency that it has received special recognition from a number of external organisations. This efficiency can be seen through the team’s turnover of devices that are examined by the Digital Forensic Unit, this has increased from four hundred a year, to four hundred a month as a result of a ‘kiosk solution’, a computer software which allows a quick examination of, for example, a mobile phone which will provide the evidence to progress a case. This has now been adopted by other forces.
Other impressive work by the department has seen them receive commendations for the role they played throughout a number of investigations, which saw the department take digital evidence from radio frequency mapping, cloud data, over a hundred device examinations and hundreds of hours in CCTV all of which helped to secure successful prosecutions.
Detective Sergeant and Digital Hub supervisor, Charles Edwards, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award. There is a lot of fantastic competition from across the country, so to be down to the last two is a real credit to everyone in the team and all their hard work.
“We are particularly proud of the fact that we are the best represented force at the International Digital Investigation and Intelligence Awards, with Peter Flynn and Jay Lucas also up for individual awards.
“There has been some excellent work done across the department over the past 12-months which has resulted in some brilliant outcomes.
“The mix of different characters, along with their strengths and a willingness to work together has made this team so effective and deserving of any recognition that they receive.”
