Leicestershire Police is tackling theft from vans by holding bespoke tool marking events in Market Harborough for local tradespeople.
The first event is taking place between 9.30am and 2.30pm on Friday 11 January 2019 and the second is at the same time on Friday 18 January 2019 at ‘SDS Trade Equipment.’ Tradespeople will have the opportunity to have their tools both marked and registered for free, as Leicestershire Police continue their fight against theft from vans.
The marking of tools not only acts as a deterrent to thieves, but also significantly increases the chances of returning the property to its rightful owner if it is recovered by the police. As a result, Leicestershire Police is encouraging all local tradespeople to come along and help protect their tools. Everyone will have the option of free engraving on all power tools, a record will also be kept of any serial numbers or tools that have been engraved and police officers will also be offering security advice.
Simon Preston, Head of Vehicle Crime at Leicestershire Police, said: “We are being proactive in our approach towards theft from vans. Over recent months we have stepped up our messaging around how to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of theft from vans and we have seen the number of offences drop.
“Unfortunately, there are still people out there breaking into vans and stealing tools. These tools are essential for trades’ people to be able to carry out their day-to-day job. Some tools are worth thousands of pounds, but it is not just the expense of replacing them that is so damaging, it is also the lost days of labour whilst replacing the tools that proves to be costly.
“Marking tools and having them registered, not only deters thieves from stealing them, but in the event that you are a victim of this type of crime, we are more likely to not only recover your tools, but reunite you with them.”
