Detectives are investigating after cash was stolen from an ATM in Lutterworth this morning (Friday 8 September).

Thieves targeted the machine on the wall of the Co-op in Linden Drive at about 3.40am, forcing their way into the premises before using a gas canister to open the ATM and stealing cassettes containing money from inside.

The cassettes were subsequently recovered earlier this morning after a member of the public reported finding them discarded in Church Lane in Gilmorton.

Significant damage was caused to the premises during the incident.

Witnesses have reported seeing several men fleeing the scene in what has been describes as a dark coloured saloon type car which drove off in the direction of Holly Drive.

The investigation is in its early stage and officers are in the process of reviewing CCTV and conducting initial enquiries at the scene.

A cordon is in place around the premises to allow for a forensic search of the area.

Anyone who may have information about the incident, or who saw a similar vehicle in the area between 3am-4am this morning, is urged to call 101 quoting incident 53 of 8 September.
