Making an appeal

If you are unhappy with the way a complaint has been handled you may be able to appeal.

If you are appealing against our investigation into your complaint, you will receive a letter from us acknowledging that we have received it and that it is currently being reviewed. Once this has been completed we will co-ordinate a response to you. Completion of your appeal may take some time, however please be assured that we will respond with an outcome in due course.

1 - Appeal against the outcome of local resolution

You may be able to appeal if your complaint was dealt with using the local resolution process.

You can appeal if:

You cannot appeal if your complaint relates to a direction and control issue (this does not apply if your complaint is about a contractor).

2 - Appeal against the police investigation into your complaint

You may be able to appeal if your complaint was dealt with through a local or supervised investigation.

3 - Appeal against a decision to disapply

You may be able to appeal if the complaints process was stopped before an investigation was undertaken. This occurs when we make a ‘decision to disapply’.

You can appeal if:

You cannot appeal if your complaint relates to a direction and control issue (this does not apply if your complaint is about a contractor), or if the Independent Police Complaints Commission gave us permission to disapply.

4 - Appeal against discontinuing an investigation

You may be able to appeal if we decided to end an ongoing investigation into your complaint.

You can appeal this decision, if:
