The Overseas Visitors Records Office (OVRO) is the place to visit if you need a Police Registration Certificate (PRC) - an essential part of many foreign nationals’ condition of stay in the UK. Plan your visit using the details below and find out what essential documents you'll need to bring.
It is a legal requirement stated by the Home Office under The Immigration Regulation Act 1971, that, as a condition to remain in the United Kingdom certain foreign nationals are required to register with the police in whose area they are to reside. You must register within seven days of arrival in to the United Kingdom.
This only applies to foreign nationals who have been granted leave to remain for more than six months or where an extension is granted, therefore making the total leave to remain more than six months.
Citizens of the following countries who are admitted to the United Kingdom (UK) may be required to register with the police:
- Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan
- Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil
- China, Colombia, Cuba
- Iran, Iraq, Israel
- Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan
- Lebanon, Libya
- Moldova, Morocco
- North Korea
- Palestine, Peru
- Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria
- Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan
- United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Uzbekistan
Stateless persons are also subject of the police registration scheme.
Entry clearance officers and immigration officers can, in certain circumstances, impose the requirement to register on national of countries not listed above.
If the following is written on the visa in your passport or on the reverse of your Biometric Residence Permit you must register either within seven days of arriving in the United Kingdom or within seven days of receiving your visa extension from the Home Office:
- Police Registration within seven days of arrival
- Pol Registration
- Register/Report to the police

Please note, the nationality office now runs an appointment system it is a first come first serve basis. To attain an appointment you are advised to attend Mansfield House police station to make an appointment for either the day you attend or for another date. Mansfield House Police station is open from 8:00am so please do not attend until that time as you will not be seen until the opening time. Students are advised to vacate the station once the appointment has been made and only return when the appointment is due.
