Embedding equality and diversity principles within Leicestershire Police is pivotal to 'protecting our communities' as well as providing an equitable workplace for all our staff.
The Equality Unit provides specialist advice and guidance on all issues of diversity and equality which includes age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and transgender identity.
The unit is responsible for the management and review of the Equality Scheme and producing the annual reports and has specific responsibility for consultation and monitoring of the scheme.
The Equality Scheme assists the police in providing a foundation, structure and accountability framework ensuring cohesion between all aspects of diversity and equality both internally with our own staff and externally in how we deliver a fair and equitable service to our communities.
The Equality Scheme outlines the statutory responsibilities we have within Leicestershire Police to comply with the Equality Act 2010. As part of that responsibility we have to ensure that we meet the following 3 specific duties:-
Eliminating unlawful discrimination and harassment Advancing equality of opportunity Fostering good relations between different groups
As a result of these 3 duties we have undertaken numerous consultation and involvement exercise and continue to do so, with a wide range of representatives of different communities within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As a result of those events, meetings and consultation exercises the following are the equality objectives we have set ourselves.
- To increase the confidence of members of the community in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to report hate crimes and incidents.
- To reduce the current black/white disproportionality rate of those subjected to stop and search activity within the policing area.
- To continue to work towards a representative workforce which is reflective of the local community
- To ensure that our staff engage and communicate with members of the community in an accessible and inclusive way.
In addition, the Equality Unit is responsible for the co-ordination of the Equality Supporters Scheme which has been running since 1991.
Equality supporters include both police officers and police staff of varying ranks and levels across the organisation who are trained in all aspects of diversity and equal opportunity issues.
The main role of the Equality supporter is to give confidential and impartial support to anyone within the organisation who feels that they have been treated unfairly in any way or who have been a victim of bullying, harassment or discrimination in the workplace.
There are seven internal support networks operating within the Constabulary, namely, the Association of Muslim Police, the Black Support Network, the Christian Police Association, the Disability Support Network, the LGBT Network, the Sikh Police Association and the Womens Network. The roles of staff associations, unions and support groups are essential to our police officers and police staff feeling that the organisation cares about them. The people in these groups are extremely dedicated and assist both individuals and the organisation.
In addition, the Police is a corporate member of a range of organisations which promote diversity. These include the Race for Opportunity, Opportunity Now, Public Sector Diversity Network, Employer's Forum on Age,Stonewall and the British Association of Women Police.
